Stonehenge was constructed in stages over a period of 2000 years. Experts believe that building began around 3000 BC, and during the early Bronze Age burial mounds were added near to the circle. The stones were brought from very long distances – the bluestones from the Preseli Hills, over 150 miles away, and the sarsens probably from the Marlborough Downs, 19 miles to the north. The new visitor centre will explain the latest theories on the building techniques used, and the types of ceremonies and rituals that took place on the site.
The visitor centre has a great restaurant and cafe, plus a great shop stocked with all manner of books and gifts.
